General Questions

1. What is a Bambahús?

Bambahús units are primarily designed as growing spaces. They are built from upcycled IBC tanks and clad with new greenhouse-grade polycarbonate panels. Although greenhouses are our main product, the same modular building system can be adapted to replace many conventional small structures.

2. What materials are used to make a Bambahús?

The main structure is made from the galvanised steel frames of used IBC tanks. It is clad with greenhouse-grade polycarbonate panels and incorporates various upcycled materials.

3. How is a Bambahús different from a conventional greenhouse?

Bambahús greenhouses are robust structures designed to withstand demanding Icelandic weather conditions. They are made primarily from upcycled materials and delivered as fully assembled 6.6 m² units that are easy to transport.

The units include raised planting beds and generally do not require ground anchoring when placed on a suitable level surface. They can also be relocated when necessary.

4. Why are they called “Bambahús”?

The name comes from bambi, an Icelandic informal term for an IBC tank—the primary raw material used to create the structures. Hús is the Icelandic word for “house”.

5. How does Bambahús contribute to sustainability and upcycling?

We transform discarded materials into valuable products by giving them a new and longer-lasting purpose. Bambahús is the only company in Iceland currently upcycling industrial packaging materials in this way.

Use and Installation

6. How long does it take to install a Bambahús?

A standard single unit arrives fully assembled. Installation is therefore usually as simple as lifting it from the delivery vehicle and placing it on a suitable level surface.

For double, triple, or larger configurations, our team handles the assembly. A double or triple unit can generally be assembled on site in approximately three hours.

7. Can I install a Bambahús myself, or is professional assistance required?

A standard unit is delivered fully assembled and only needs to be positioned on a suitable surface. Larger modular configurations require some assembly and can be installed using standard tools. We can also provide on-site installation assistance.

8. Does a Bambahús require a special foundation or site preparation?

A suitable level surface is generally all that is required. If the unit is placed directly on grass or cultivated ground, we recommend installing a ground membrane or similar material underneath it.

9. Can a Bambahús withstand Icelandic weather?

Yes. Bambahús units are specifically designed for Icelandic conditions and have performed well in strong winds, storms, and snow. Their robust steel construction and securely fastened panels provide strength and stability in demanding weather.

10. How long does a Bambahús last?

With normal care and maintenance, a Bambahús is designed to remain in use for many decades.

11. Can I take my Bambahús with me if I move?

Yes. Bambahús units are designed to be transportable and can be relocated to a new site. Once the planting beds have been emptied, a standard unit weighs approximately 200 kg.

12. Does a Bambahús have ventilation and opening windows or doors?

Yes. Each unit has a door with removable fixed panels and opening roof windows for ventilation.

13. What sizes are available?

The standard unit has a footprint of 6.6 m². Double, triple, and larger modular configurations are also available.

Questions About Uses

14. Is Bambahús suitable for preschools and primary schools?

Yes. Bambahús greenhouses are widely used by Icelandic schools for teaching, cultivation, and hands-on environmental projects.

15. Can individuals purchase a Bambahús for private use?

Yes. Individuals can order directly from us.

16. Are special versions available for bicycle storage, saunas, or other uses?

Yes. We offer a variety of configurations and can adapt the modular system to specific projects and requirements.

17. What can be grown inside a Bambahús?

You can grow the same vegetables, herbs, flowers, and other plants commonly grown in conventional greenhouses. The units can also be adapted for hydroponic or aquaponic growing systems.

18. Can Bambahús units be used for purposes other than cultivation?

Yes. They can also be adapted as storage areas, workspaces, bicycle storage, learning environments, or small community spaces.

Purchasing and Pricing

19. How much does a Bambahús cost?

Prices depend on the size, configuration, and intended use. Please visit our Solutions page for further information or contact us for a personalised quotation.

20. What payment options are available?

Payment can be made by bank transfer. Alternative arrangements may also be available by agreement with us.

21. Are grants or municipal partnership agreements available?

Many schools have obtained grants or developed partnerships with municipalities and supporting businesses. Available funding opportunities vary between projects and locations.

22. Do you offer discounts for group or volume orders?

Yes. We provide customised quotations for larger or multiple-unit orders.

23. Can a Bambahús be customised?

Yes. We can adapt the structures to suit different projects, spaces, users, and practical requirements.

Maintenance and Durability

24. What maintenance does a Bambahús require?

Windows and doors should be kept clean and in good working order, and hinges should be lubricated when necessary. Beyond this routine care, very little maintenance is normally required.

25. Are there any parts that may need to be replaced?

Windows, doors, fasteners, and other moving components may occasionally require maintenance or replacement. The main galvanised steel structure is designed to be highly durable.

26. Is Bambahús suitable for winter cultivation?

Yes. Bambahús can be used for winter cultivation when appropriate heating, lighting, and growing conditions are provided. The structures are clad with 10 mm insulated polycarbonate panels, offering considerably better insulation than single-layer greenhouse coverings.

27. Is Bambahús fire-resistant?

The main structure is made from galvanised steel, while the polycarbonate panels are designed to be flame-retardant. Specific fire-performance classifications may depend on the materials and configuration used in each unit.

Environment and Community

28. How does Bambahús help reduce waste?

We give used IBC tanks and surplus construction materials a valuable second life instead of allowing them to become waste or sending them directly into energy- and resource-intensive recycling processes.

29. What kinds of community projects does Bambahús support?

We work with preschools, primary schools, municipalities, charities, and community organisations throughout Iceland.

30. Can a Bambahús be delivered directly to my property?

Yes. We arrange delivery throughout Iceland in consultation with the customer. For international projects, please contact us to discuss availability, production partnerships, and delivery options.

31. How quickly can a Bambahús be delivered after ordering?

Delivery time depends on the size, configuration, and number of units ordered. Standard orders can generally be delivered within a few weeks, subject to current production capacity.

32. Can I view a Bambahús before purchasing?

Yes. We have demonstration units in Reykjavík and can arrange visits and product presentations.

33. What happens if something is damaged or needs repair?

We provide repair services, replacement parts, and maintenance guidance.

34. Is Bambahús accessible to people with reduced mobility?

Yes. The raised planting beds are positioned at a comfortable working height and can be adjusted to suit different needs. The interior layout can also be adapted to improve access for wheelchair users.

35. Can Bambahús units form part of a larger building solution?

Yes. Multiple units can be connected to create larger spaces and configurations.

36. Do you provide guidance or educational support with a Bambahús purchase?

Yes. We provide advice on installation, cultivation, and practical use. We also collaborate with schools and communities on educational projects and learning initiatives.
